Amaechi Alleges Buhari Withheld Electoral Reforms Over Hacking Fears.
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has claimed that former President Muhammadu Buhari refused to implement electoral reforms during his tenure after being warned that Russia could potentially hack Nigeria’s electoral system and manipulate the outcome to favor a preferred candidate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Amaechi made the assertion on Thursday evening while addressing opposition members, criticizing both political actors and citizens for what he described as insufficient resistance to government overreach.
He argued that Nigeria’s political challenges are less about those in power and more about the inability of opposition forces to organize effectively.
“All I want to say is that Tinubu is not our problem. The problem is your position. We are our own problem. When the position is ready, Nigeria will change. The first thing we must understand is that we need to separate ourselves from the government in power,” Amaechi said.
The former Rivers State governor emphasized that opposition leaders must clearly differentiate themselves from the ruling establishment to drive political change.
Amaechi further alleged that attempts to reform the electoral system during Buhari’s administration were blocked after some ministers convinced the former president not to approve proposed amendments.
“I will repeat what I said in one of these conferences. During my time in government under Buhari, he wanted electoral reform. But a few ministers went to him and persuaded him not to sign, claiming that Russia could hack the system and impose the wrong president. He refused to sign. Ironically, the same people are now calling for electoral reform,” he said, though he did not name the ministers or provide evidence.
He also predicted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his supporters might eventually champion electoral reforms.
“Tinubu will one day call for electoral reform. If he doesn’t, those supporting him will,” Amaechi said.
Continuing his critique, he noted that political leaders often gauge public resistance gradually, taking bolder steps when the opposition appears weak.
“His strategy is simple. He tries something small today; if you respond weakly, he does something bigger tomorrow,” he said.
Amaechi also questioned government conduct amid corruption allegations.
“Which president travels to France for an award while people are shouting, ‘This man is stealing our money’? He goes, asking, ‘What can you do?’ The day you show him you can act, God will bless him,” he said.
He concluded by noting that he was simply speaking openly about Nigeria’s political realities.
“I think, like everyone else, I’ve said what needed to be said,” Amaechi added.
