Shockwave In Bayelsa: Governor Diri Dumps PDP, Joins APC In Dramatic Defection.
According to Nivo News, Bayelsa State witnessed a major political realignment as Governor Douye Diri officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a historic shift in the state’s political landscape. The defection, which took place at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, was attended by a massive crowd and top political figures across the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The event was filled with jubilation as the APC’s broom symbol dominated the air. Supporters sang, danced, and waved banners as the governor received the party flag from APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, in the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Diri, who arrived with his political allies, described the move as a collective decision by the Ijaw nation to align with the ruling party at the centre. “This is not just a Bayelsa defection; it is the Ijaw nation joining the APC,” he declared.
With this defection, four out of the six Southsouth states—Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Enugu—are now under APC control, further strengthening the party’s influence ahead of the 2027 elections. Diri’s departure from the PDP came with massive support as two senators, several commissioners, advisers, and 23 out of 24 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly also crossed over to the APC.
Vice President Shettima hailed the defection as a victory for national unity, describing Diri as “a leader who has built bridges where there were barriers.” He noted that the governor’s developmental strides and inclusive leadership justified his decision to align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration.
APC leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Progressive Governors Forum Chairman Hope Uzodimma, and Minister Festus Keyamo, praised the defection as the final piece solidifying APC’s dominance in the region. Keyamo described it as “the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle” that positions the APC for total victory in 2027.
During his speech, Governor Diri explained that his decision was driven by the need to safeguard Bayelsa’s political and developmental future. He said he left the PDP after realizing it had been “hijacked by undertakers determined to bury the party.”
“After all consultations with our leaders, it became clear that staying in PDP would mean burying Bayelsa’s political future,” Diri said. “I took the decision for my people, and I will continue to prioritize peace, security, and development in our state.”
He also commended President Tinubu’s commitment to developing the Niger Delta through landmark projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the Nembe-Brass Road. According to him, the President’s interventions aligned with long-standing Ijaw aspirations for coastal connectivity and regional growth.
With Diri’s defection, Bayelsa’s long-standing history as a PDP stronghold has been broken. The governor now assumes the position of APC leader in the state, charged with steering the party’s affairs ahead of 2027. The move is widely seen as a turning point in the Southsouth’s political realignment, with APC now commanding significant influence across the region.

Total Chaos In PDP: INEC Forms Trigger Brutal Power Struggle Between Wike And Turaki Camps!.
The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated, with factions led by Minister Nyesom Wike and Tanimu Turaki clashing over rival nomination forms and conflicting lists of candidates for the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Wike-backed Faction’s Stance: Jungudo Mohammed, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, dismissed the Turaki group’s activities as “419” (fraud) and propaganda, asserting that they would have no impact on the PDP’s electoral prospects. He further stated that the Turaki faction lacks the necessary access codes from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload candidate information. Additionally, he challenged INEC to investigate the authenticity of the forms used by the rival camp and suggested that those responsible for any potential forgery should face criminal prosecution.
-
Turaki-led Faction’s Stance: Ini Ememobong, the Publicity Secretary for the Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee, rejected the allegations that their nomination forms were fraudulent. Ememobong stated that the determination of document authenticity lies solely with INEC, rather than the opposing faction. While acknowledging that the ongoing conflict has negatively impacted the party, he maintained that his faction is “carefully navigating” the situation and remains confident that pending court cases will result in their favor.
Context of the Legal Conflict
-
The tension follows an April 30, 2026, Supreme Court ruling that nullified the November 2025 PDP national convention, which had originally established the Turaki-led leadership.
-
Although the Board of Trustees reappointed Turaki to an interim committee following the ruling, INEC continues to recognize the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu, granting them the exclusive access codes required for candidate uploads.
