The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side), which speaks for eight civil service unions, said workers are owed three months of salaries and other pending payments across federal ministries, departments, and agencies. The unions directed that the funds be released by February 27, 2026, warning that failure to comply would force them to take action.

They accused the government of withholding funds ready for disbursement, noting that although some partial payments were made under pressure, three months remain unpaid since July 2024.

The dispute followed the government’s approval of a ₦70,000 minimum wage after the removal of fuel subsidies, with workers expecting timely implementation. The unions also highlighted unpaid promotion arrears for staff promoted over three years ago, salary arrears for employees recruited between 2015 and 2024, and proper implementation of the 40% peculiar allowance linked to the new minimum wage.

Letters outlining the deadline were sent to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, security agencies, and affiliated unions. The unions stressed that federal workers should not suffer hardship due to delayed payments and demanded that their entitlements be honoured.

The former aide had earlier been granted bail after spending about 50 days in detention last year, having fulfilled the conditions set by the court at the time.

Saidu, a close ally of El-Rufai, has remained active in Kaduna’s political space and is also reportedly linked with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state.

The Commission explained that the adjustments were necessary to align with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, which was recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after approval by the National Assembly.

In a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC said the new legal framework made it necessary to comprehensively review previously announced election dates.
