Niger State Government And Striking Workers Reach Accord....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a development on February 22, 2024, Governor Mohammed Bago’s administration and the labor union have successfully reached a consensus following the recent strike initiated by the Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)…..READ ALSO
The indefinite strike, which commenced on Wednesday, was prompted by the failure of the state government to address the grievances of the workers.
Resulting in the closure of numerous public offices and the absence of civil servants from their duties.
Governor Bago promptly engaged in discussions with labor leaders, convening a meeting in the council chamber of the Niger State Government House. The fruitful dialogue concluded with both parties uniting in the labor solidarity anthem, signifying a favorable resolution.
During a subsequent press briefing, Idrees Lafene, the state NLC chairman, announced the successful resolution of the raised concerns.
“We have comprehensively addressed all the raised issues and have reached a mutually agreeable understanding with the government.
“For instance, concerning the wage increase, the government has committed to implementing a N20,000 raise across the board for both state and local government employees by March.
“In terms of the leave grant, it has been agreed to disburse it over a six-month period, with a one-time payment for the time being.
“To address concerns regarding reversed appointments, a tripartite committee has been established, comprising representatives from the House of Assembly, the executive, and the Labour,” Lafene stated.
He further indicated his intention to communicate the outcomes of the meeting with the governor to union members, emphasizing that only they possess the authority to conclude the strike.
Governor Bago expressed optimism that the labor union would heed the resolution, given the successful resolution of all contentious issues.
“We have reached an agreement and can assure Nigerians and residents of Niger State that all raised concerns have been satisfactorily addressed.
“Arrears have been settled, and although some issues were inherited and promises were not fulfilled, we have now resolved them. We have solidified our commitment through a comprehensive agreement between the Labor and the state government.
“All issues have been effectively resolved.
“For instance, the leave grant has been replaced with a consolidated salary. Unfortunately, while some received payments in 2019, others did not. Additionally, regarding appointments, it’s the nomenclature, not the appointments themselves, that’s at issue. A tripartite committee has been formed involving the state government, the state Assembly, and the Labor to review the laws and find an amicable resolution,” Governor Bago assured.
He further reassured the public that normalcy would soon be restored in public offices.

No More Hiding: Fashola Drops Massive Revelations On Nigeria’s Deepening Insecurity.
While delivering the keynote address at the 12th Triennial National Conference of Jama’at-ul Islamiyya of Nigeria in Magodo, Lagos, former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola asserted that Nigeria must overhaul its strategy for tackling insecurity rather than merely deploying more personnel to the streets.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Addressing an audience of security and societal challenges, Fashola highlighted several key points:
-
Systemic Reform Over Numbers: True resolution requires addressing deep institutional flaws rather than relying solely on police or military headcounts.
-
Rule of Law: Nigeria must restore absolute respect for law and order, ensuring that no individual is above the law regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.
-
Mindset Shift: Citizens need to reevaluate their attitudes toward legitimate authority and the values transmitted to the younger generation.
-
Uniform Integrity: Security personnel must recognize that their uniforms embody state authority, meaning officer misconduct directly undermines public trust in government.
-
The Asymmetry of Crime: Fighting crime requires proactive intelligence gathering and prevention, noting that while security forces must succeed consistently, criminals require only a single opportunity to inflict damage.
-
Youth and Substance Abuse: Tackling drug abuse and youth idleness—through productive engagements like the National Youth Sports Festival—is critical to preventing recruitment into crime.
-
Professionalization of State Police: Any move toward state policing must be handled with utmost seriousness, focusing on rigorous recruitment, professional training, and career progression rather than a mere expansion of numbers.
