“Edo Attack: ADC Blames Itself, Not APC — Oyegun Residence Crisis Explained”
The Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, has rejected claims linking the All Progressives Congress (APC) or Governor Monday Okpebholo to the recent attack on the residence of former Edo State governor John Odigie-Oyegun.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview with ARISE News on Wednesday, Afegbua described the incident as the result of internal disputes within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the violence showed “all the hallmarks of ADC versus ADC.”
He explained that tensions had been rising days before the attack, following a political meeting at Oyegun’s residence where certain party members were allegedly denied entry. The situation escalated when aggrieved members staged protests and chanted outside the premises.
“There were clear signs of internal disagreements before the unfortunate disturbance,” he said.
Afegbua maintained that Governor Okpebholo acted responsibly after reports of gunshots near the residence emerged, immediately directing the Commissioner of Police to investigate.
He added that pellets from the gunfire reportedly reached the Government House compound, prompting rapid security intervention. He dismissed suggestions that the residence’s proximity to Government House implied official complicity, emphasizing that security agencies were notified as soon as the disturbance occurred.
The commissioner also criticised former presidential candidate Peter Obi for drawing premature conclusions, accusing him of politicising the situation while ignoring the ADC’s internal tensions.
Assuring residents of accountability, Afegbua said law enforcement agencies would conduct a thorough investigation and prosecute anyone found responsible. He stressed that the state government would not tolerate any form of political violence.
Afegbua defended Governor Okpebholo against allegations of encouraging thuggery, highlighting his commitment to infrastructure development, security reforms, and political inclusiveness in Edo State. He reiterated that the administration remains focused on good governance and maintaining peace across the state.
