The development comes after the National Assembly passed the amendment and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave it assent. While the law is now official, opposition parties have raised objections to several provisions, particularly the lack of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of results directly from polling units.

Opposition leaders are pushing for compulsory electronic transmission to ensure greater transparency and credibility in future elections. A major point of contention is the clause permitting manual collation of results in case of network failure, which critics argue could compromise electoral integrity and create opportunities for manipulation.

Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:

“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
