The Presidency has stated that the naira could have strengthened to ₦1,000 per dollar within weeks if the Central Bank of Nigeria had not stepped into the foreign exchange market on Monday to stabilise the system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Vice President Kashim Shettima described the situation as a signal to individuals who hoard foreign currency.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Progressive Governors’ Forum Renewed Hope Ambassadors Strategic Summit in Abuja, Shettima said the apex bank’s intervention was aimed at maintaining market stability.

“In fact, if not for the interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria yesterday, we were heading towards ₦1,000 to a dollar in weeks, not months. But for market stability, the CBN intervened,” he said.

He added that the move should serve as a warning to those who stockpile dollars, stressing that the economy is showing signs of recovery. According to him, Nigeria attracted five out of seven major investment decisions recorded in Africa last year, reflecting renewed investor confidence. He noted that as 2026 approaches, the administration’s focus will shift from stabilisation to accelerated growth.

In a related development, Shettima called on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, to resolve their differences for the sake of the state’s progress.

He made the appeal at the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Summit held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he represented President Bola Tinubu.

The Vice President urged both leaders, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to prioritise unity amid reports of internal rifts that reportedly resulted in parallel party congresses in Benue State.

Addressing Akume directly, Shettima described him as a seasoned statesman with decades of public service experience and encouraged him to take the lead in fostering reconciliation. He emphasised that Benue requires stability and cooperation among its leaders to achieve meaningful development.

According to Shettima, unity must outweigh personal disagreements, noting that national interest should always come first. Quoting civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., he stressed that Nigerians must choose unity over division to secure the country’s future.

According to him, the situation has heightened awareness among citizens, leading to increased political participation and a steady influx of new members into the party.

Abdullahi stated that the surge in registrations became noticeable after INEC’s decision affecting David Mark, noting that many Nigerians now have a clearer understanding of ongoing political developments.

The development comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, with factions led by Nafiu Bala and David Mark both laying claim to the party’s structure.

The dispute, which dates back to July 2025 following the emergence of an opposition coalition, has resulted in prolonged legal battles.

Citing a March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal, INEC announced that it would not recognise either faction, a position conveyed in a statement by its National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna.

The electoral body added that it would refrain from engaging with both groups, including participation in their meetings, congresses, or conventions, pending the outcome of a case before a Federal High Court.
