Rivers Crisis Deepens As PANDEF Steps In To Halt Wike–Fubara Political Showdown.
According to Nivo News, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has stepped into the escalating political tension in Rivers State, calling on all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritise peace for the stability of the state and the wider Niger Delta region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The socio-political group expressed concern that the ongoing disagreement involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and the Rivers State House of Assembly could spiral into widespread disorder if not urgently addressed.
In response to the growing crisis, PANDEF’s Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee convened on Friday and announced the formation of a seven-member reconciliation committee tasked with mediating and resolving the impasse. The committee is chaired by former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, with Senator Obende Domingo serving as vice chairman. Other members include Chief Essien Nduese, Dr Timiebi Koripamo-Agari, Chief Mike Ejiofor, Mrs Nella Rabana-Andem (SAN), while Prince Godwin Okotie, PANDEF’s Deputy National Secretary, will act as secretary.
In a joint statement signed by the forum’s leaders, Alfred Diete-Spiff and Victor Attah, co-chairmen of the Board of Trustees, alongside National Chairman Godknows Igali, PANDEF described the situation in Rivers State as deeply troubling. The group warned that recent political developments had deteriorated to the point where the Rivers State House of Assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings against both the governor and his deputy.
PANDEF stressed that such actions pose a serious threat to peace and constitutional order, noting that Rivers State holds strategic importance not only to the Niger Delta but also to Nigeria’s political stability and economic wellbeing. The forum reiterated its non-partisan posture, describing itself as a unifying platform for the South-South region, and urged all political actors to embrace dialogue, tolerance and compromise.
The group appealed to stakeholders to place the welfare of Rivers State residents above political interests, highlighting the need to protect the interests of the Niger Delta, Nigeria at large, and the expatriate community living in the state. While acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, elders of Rivers State and other concerned Nigerians toward peace, PANDEF called on all parties to cooperate fully with the reconciliation committee to achieve a fair, peaceful and lasting resolution to the crisis.
