Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported on X that troops “thwarted a coordinated multi-pronged terrorist assault on positions in Kukawa after a prolonged overnight battle backed by air support.”
Military sources indicated that the attackers, “mounted on gun trucks, motorcycles, and on foot, launched the assault from multiple directions late on February 20.”
Troops mounted a determined defence, engaging the insurgents in intense combat that continued into the early hours of February 21. The insurgents were eventually forced to withdraw, reportedly dragging away their casualties.
Air strikes were later deployed against the retreating fighters. Makama noted that “air strikes destroyed one gun truck and several motorcycles carrying fleeing insurgents, neutralising additional terrorists.”
Follow-up operations by the military led to the recovery of 13 AK-47 rifles, 16 loaded magazines, three handheld radios, and other items believed to have been used by the attackers. There was also evidence suggesting that the insurgents evacuated some of their wounded from the battlefield.
“One soldier was killed during the encounter, and some equipment was damaged by rocket fire,” Makama added, noting that injured personnel were evacuated and are reported to be in stable condition.
Military authorities emphasized that the coordinated ground and air operations reflect “sustained pressure on insurgent elements and ongoing efforts to degrade their combat capability across the theatre.”
