The motion highlighted the continuous attacks on the affected communities by Fulani herders, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of properties, and displacement of residents. Senator Isah emphasized the dire situation faced by the displaced persons, estimating their number to be around 30,000, and noted the abandonment of farmlands due to security concerns.

The motion specifically referenced an attack on April 5, 2024, which resulted in the loss of 21 innocent lives and extensive damage to farm produce in Agojeju Odo and Ajokpachi Odo communities.

During the Senate session, Senator Adams Oshiomhole stressed the urgency of addressing the crisis and called for concrete actions to end the violence. He proposed a stakeholder conference to facilitate comprehensive discussions on resolving herders’ attacks, emphasizing the need for effective measures to prevent further bloodshed.

Similarly, Senator Titus Zam Tartenger highlighted the significance of legislation in addressing the farmers-herders conflict, advocating for the enactment of a law prohibiting open grazing nationwide. He asserted that such legislation would establish clear boundaries and deter unlawful activities associated with herding, ultimately contributing to lasting peace and security.

The Senate’s resolution underscores the gravity of the situation in Omala and signals a call to action for the government to prioritize the rehabilitation of affected communities and implement measures to prevent future incidents of violence.
