Headline:Tension As NJC Begins Discreet Probe Of Senior Judges.

Published

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has launched a discreet yet extensive investigation into several high-ranking judges in the country, including heads of courts, insiders say.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sources familiar with the matter told Premium Times that the “extraordinary” probe was prompted by a series of serious petitions against unnamed senior judicial officers.

Chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the NJC is constitutionally responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of judicial officers.

According to the sources, the inquiry follows what they described as a wave of “damning and disturbing petitions” alleging serious misconduct.

“One allegation against a senior judge is so severe that Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun has ordered an urgent investigation to identify those responsible and restore the integrity of the judiciary,” said an official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the probe is being conducted under strict confidentiality and is known only to a limited number of insiders.

“The NJC has recently received multiple complaints alleging serious misconduct, including forgery, falsification of age, and false asset declarations. Deeply concerned by these allegations, the CJN is mobilising the NJC for immediate administrative action to prevent further erosion of public trust in the judiciary,” the source said.

Officials declined to reveal the identities of the judges under investigation or the petitioners, citing confidentiality.

Tobi Soniyi, Senior Special Assistant to the CJN on Media, referred enquiries to the NJC, stating he had not been briefed. Similarly, Kemi Babalola-Ogedengbe, NJC’s Deputy Director (Information), said she was unaware of any ongoing probe.

Justice Kekere-Ekun, during the opening of the 2025/2026 legal year in September 2025, had pledged reforms to strengthen judicial excellence, transparency, and the effective administration of justice.

At her swearing-in as acting CJN in August 2024, she acknowledged declining public confidence in the judiciary and vowed to restore trust.

Since taking office, the NJC has disciplined several judges. On November 15, 2024, the council compulsorily retired two judges, suspended two others for two years, and issued formal warnings to another. Seven investigative committees were also set up to examine allegations of misconduct.

On June 26, 2025, the NJC retired 10 judges, cautioned five others, and barred a judge of the National Industrial Court from promotion for three years.

Nicolas Pepe: I Have No Regrets Leaving Arsenal For Villarreal.

Published

on

Nicolas Pepe has said he has no regrets about leaving Arsenal, adding that his move to Villarreal has brought him the stability and confidence he lacked during his time in north London.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Ivory Coast winger joined Arsenal in 2019 for a club-record fee of £72.5 million but struggled to fully establish himself. He scored 27 goals in 112 appearances before falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta as the squad underwent restructuring.

Pepe believes that limited communication with Arteta was a major challenge during his spell in England, contrasting it with his current relationship with Villarreal manager Marcelino Garcia Toral.

Speaking to Flashscore, he said: “First, it’s different. These two managers are really different.

“We’ll start with Arteta, who is a coach who asks for certain things. Sometimes it was a bit tough for me, where from time to time we didn’t have this communication. And that’s what I regret the most, not having enough communication with him.

“Then with coach Marcelino, it’s the opposite, where I think we talk about everything, about nothing, football, not football, whatever.

“I always say that I prefer a coach who is totally transparent with me, whether it’s the right or the wrong side. It allows me to move forward and progress.”

Now 30, Pepe has regained form in Spain, registering five goals and four assists in 29 La Liga appearances this season. He says the style of football in Spain suits him better.

He added: “It’s totally different in terms of intensity of play. In the Premier League, we were very much focused on the intensity whereas in Spain we are more relaxed. The idea of playing is to play the ball.

“With stadiums in England, I think there are no better ones. You can go to the third or fourth division, you will have stadiums that are filled with incredible atmosphere.

“In Spain, too, there’s atmosphere, but it’s totally different. So I think it’s two different leagues, but they are at a very high level.”
