The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has responded to the results of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, congratulating its winning candidates while announcing the formation of a legal team to challenge the conduct of the polls.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party alleged that the elections were marred by intimidation and undue interference by the executive.

“The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party congratulates the successful PDP candidates in the Area Council Elections held in Abuja on February 21, 2026,” the statement read.

The party noted that the victories were secured despite what it described as unprecedented intimidation, excessive money politics, and blatant executive meddling.

“This victory, although fewer than we expected, is particularly encouraging given the environment of extreme intimidation, high-powered financial influence, and executive interference,” the PDP said.

The opposition party further claimed that armed security personnel were deployed to manipulate the election outcomes.

“Reports and video evidence indicate that armed security operatives were used to remove result sheets from polling units, intimidate voters, and unfairly influence the election results,” it added.

The PDP specifically congratulated Mohammed Kasim, declared the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election by INEC, along with the councillors announced as successful.

“We particularly congratulate the Chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim, and the councillors declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission,” the statement said.

Earlier, INEC had declared the APC candidate, Christopher Maikalangu, as the winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council election.

The PDP announced the creation of a special legal team, led by National Legal Adviser Shafi Bara’u, Esq., to handle post-election complaints and litigations arising from the polls.

“Aggrieved candidates should promptly contact the National Legal Adviser to ensure swift action, as delays can be fatal in election petition cases,” the statement warned.

The party also attributed the low voter turnout to perceived flaws in the Electoral Act 2026.

“The extremely low voter participation in these polls reflects the anti-people nature of the Electoral Act 2026, which has eroded public confidence in elections conducted under its provisions,” the PDP said.

It cautioned that if reforms are not urgently implemented, the conduct of the FCT council elections could foreshadow similar issues in the 2027 general elections.

“These Local Council polls may serve as a warning of the challenges the forthcoming 2027 general elections could face if immediate reforms are not made,” the PDP added.

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
