Trump Slaps Fresh 10% Tariff After Supreme Court Nullifies Earlier Trade Duties.

Published

Donald Trump on Friday announced a fresh 10 per cent tariff on imports from all countries, acting just hours after the Supreme Court of the United States invalidated his earlier trade duties.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The apex court, in a 6-3 ruling, held that Trump did not have the authority to invoke emergency powers to impose the previous tariffs on imports.

Following the judgment, Trump signed an executive order cancelling the voided tariffs and issued a new proclamation introducing a 10 per cent levy on most goods entering the United States for a 150-day period. The White House, however, exempted selected items such as critical minerals, metals and energy products.

Trump Criticises Supreme Court Ruling

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump expressed displeasure with the decision.

“I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” he said.

He further alleged, without presenting evidence, that the majority of the justices had yielded to foreign influence.

“They’re very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution. It’s my opinion that the court has been swayed by foreign interests,” the president stated.

Trump relied on Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to introduce the new measure, becoming the first US president to activate the provision.

The statute permits the president to impose tariffs of up to 15 per cent for a maximum of 150 days in response to international balance-of-payments concerns.

Legal analysts indicate that the latest move could also face judicial scrutiny, as any extension beyond the 150-day window would require approval from Congress.

In reaction to the ruling, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that while the court’s decision had mixed implications, the administration intended to restore similar tariff levels through alternative mechanisms.

“The Supreme Court has taken away the President’s leverage, but in a way, they have made the leverage that he has more draconian because they agreed he does have the right to a full embargo,” Bessent said.

The judgment also left uncertainty over the fate of the $133 billion previously collected from American importers under what the court described as Trump’s “incorrect interpretation” of the law.
