Omission Was ‘Painful’ But Fair – Tolu Arokodare Opens Up On AFCON Snub.

Published

Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has acknowledged that he was not surprised to miss out on Nigeria’s final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), admitting his recent performances and limited playing time at club level made his exclusion understandable.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. forward, who joined the club last summer after an impressive stint with KRC Genk, was named in Nigeria’s provisional list but failed to secure a spot in the final squad for the tournament in Morocco.

From home, Arokodare watched as the Super Eagles secured a bronze medal, defeating Egypt national football team 4-2 on penalties in the third-place match.

Speaking to Counter Attack, the 23-year-old identified his performance against DR Congo national football team during the World Cup qualifying play-offs as a defining moment.

“To be very honest, I already knew — nobody had to tell me. Since that Congo game, I could sense it,” Arokodare said.

“In that match, the way I came on and the way things went, it wasn’t ideal. I don’t even want to dwell on the chance I missed because anyone can miss a chance. I was simply trying to score.”

He also admitted that competition for attacking spots in the national team was intense, with established forwards like Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu leading the line, alongside other in-form attackers pushing for selection.

“My last game with the national team didn’t go well, and at Wolves I wasn’t getting enough minutes. I had to be honest with myself — if I were the coach, would I select me?” he reflected.

Although he tried to be realistic, Arokodare admitted the omission still hurt.

“When the final list came out and my name wasn’t there, I wouldn’t say I was shocked, but it was painful to realise I wasn’t chosen,” he said.

Since then, the striker has begun earning more playing time at Wolverhampton Wanderers as they battle to avoid relegation. With the next international break approaching in March, Arokodare will be aiming to build on his recent progress and work his way back into Super Eagles contention.
