Nigerian Footballers Who Hit 100 Appearances For Multiple Clubs In Europe’s Top Five Leagues

Published

on

Across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, only a select group of Nigerian players have achieved the uncommon milestone of making at least 100 appearances for more than one club in Europe’s top five leagues.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Below are the Nigerians who have reached that landmark:

Austin Okocha

Austin Okocha was more than a footballer — he was a showman. Fans watched him expecting the extraordinary, and he often delivered.

His rise in Europe gathered momentum at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he made 116 appearances, 90 of them in the Bundesliga. It was in Germany that his flair and audacity fully blossomed.

He later joined Paris Saint-Germain F.C., featuring 113 times overall, including 84 Ligue 1 matches and six outings in the UEFA Champions League.

Okocha’s move to Bolton Wanderers F.C. cemented his cult status in England. He recorded 145 appearances, 124 of them in the Premier League, becoming the creative spark in a side known for upsetting bigger opponents.

Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu brought elegance and composure to the pitch.

At Arsenal F.C., he played 197 matches in all competitions, including 119 Premier League appearances, scoring 44 goals and winning multiple FA Cups during one of the club’s golden eras.

He later moved to Portsmouth F.C., where he featured 166 times, reaching 100 Premier League games for the south coast side. His decisive goal in the 2008 FA Cup final against Cardiff City F.C. remains one of the most iconic moments in the club’s history.

Obafemi Martins

Obafemi Martins was known for his pace and sharp finishing.

He made 136 appearances for Inter Milan, scoring 49 goals. Eighty-eight of those games came in Serie A, alongside 25 Champions League appearances, where he netted nine times.

A switch to Newcastle United F.C. saw him reach 104 matches overall, including 88 in the Premier League, scoring 28 league goals and adding six more in nine UEFA Cup fixtures.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Yakubu Aiyegbeni earned a reputation as a dependable goalscorer.

At Middlesbrough F.C., he played 104 games and scored 35 goals across competitions, including 25 in 73 Premier League matches.

He maintained similar consistency with Everton F.C., recording 107 appearances and 33 goals overall, 25 of which came in the league. He also found the net four times in eight UEFA Cup outings for the Merseyside club.

Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi stands as the only active member of this elite list, building a career marked by steady progression.

He began at Arsenal F.C., making 149 appearances, including 100 in the Premier League and 17 in the Europa League. He then featured 140 times for Everton F.C., with 123 league matches.

Now at Fulham F.C., Iwobi recently reached his 100th appearance for the club, 88 of them in the Premier League. Across spells at Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, he has amassed 311 Premier League games — an impressive tally for a player still in his prime.

Iwobi and his uncle, Okocha, remain the only Nigerians to have recorded 100 appearances for three different clubs in Europe’s top five leagues.

Honourable Mentions

Joseph Yobo surpassed 100 appearances for Everton but does not qualify for this list, as his other century came with Fenerbahçe S.K., outside Europe’s top five leagues.

Similarly, Kelechi Iheanacho made over 100 appearances for Leicester City F.C., but his 64 matches for Manchester City F.C. fall short of the required mark for multiple clubs.
