“INEC Should Avoid Elections During Ramadan – Shari’a Judge”.
A Shari’a Court judge, Bashir Hassan Bashir, has advised that elections should ideally not be fixed during the month of Ramadan, particularly in a country with a significant Muslim population.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview, he said it would be preferable to avoid scheduling polls during the fasting period.
He explained that one of the key concerns is the physical strain associated with fasting, noting that election days often require voters to stand in long queues under the sun, which can lead to exhaustion and weakness.
According to him, Ramadan is also a time of heightened spiritual activities, including prayers, Qur’an recitation, and other acts of worship, which may limit public movement and engagement.
Bashir suggested that conducting elections either before or after Ramadan could boost voter turnout, as people would not be managing the physical and spiritual demands of fasting.
He maintained that fixing election dates outside Ramadan would promote convenience, fairness, and broader participation in the democratic process.
However, he stated that if election dates remain unchanged, Muslims can still fulfill both their religious and civic obligations by planning ahead.
He advised voters to arrive early at polling units before the heat intensifies and to maintain their health by eating a proper pre-dawn meal, hydrating sufficiently before fasting begins, and resting after voting where possible.
The judge also urged Muslims to approach voting with good intentions, describing it as a civic responsibility aimed at promoting the common good.
He added that worship and civic duty can go hand in hand, encouraging voters to engage in prayers and remembrance of God while participating in the electoral process.
While reiterating that it would be preferable to avoid Ramadan for elections to ensure ease and wider participation, he stressed that voting does not invalidate fasting and remains a civic right.
Bashir further called on young people to support others, particularly the elderly and those with limited strength, to help them access polling units more easily.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) earlier announced that the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, while governorship and state assembly polls are fixed for March 6, 2027.
The announcement sparked concerns about a possible clash between Ramadan, Lent, and the 2027 general elections.
Subsequently, the Senate amended Clause 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026, granting INEC the legal flexibility to adjust the 2027 general election timetable if necessary.
