DSS Fixes Date To Arraign Nasir El-Rufai.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a three-count criminal charge against former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over alleged cybercrime and threats to national security.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, El-Rufai is set to be arraigned on February 25 before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik scheduled the date after the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, assigned the case to her.
The charges, filed under FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026, were instituted by the DSS, Nigeria’s secret police. Court documents allege that El-Rufai unlawfully intercepted the telephone communications of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
The DSS claims that during a February 13 appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time Programme, El-Rufai admitted that he and his associates intercepted the NSA’s phone communications. This allegation falls under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
The second count accuses him of admitting on the same interview that he knew of someone who unlawfully intercepted the NSA’s communications but failed to report the matter to the relevant security agencies, an offence punishable under Section 27(b) of the Cybercrimes Amendment Act, 2024.
The third count alleges that El-Rufai and others still at large, at some point in 2026 in Abuja, used technical equipment or systems to compromise public safety and national security by unlawfully intercepting the NSA’s communications. The DSS states this is contrary to Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
During the Arise TV interview, El-Rufai also claimed that he overheard Ribadu directing security operatives to detain him, linking the alleged order to what he described as an attempted arrest at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on February 12, upon his return from Cairo, Egypt.
This development adds to a string of legal challenges for the former governor. He was previously detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged corruption. Although granted administrative bail on Wednesday around 8 p.m., he was reportedly taken into custody immediately by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Confirming his detention, ICPC spokesperson John Odey stated via a journalists’ WhatsApp group: “Malam Nasiru El-Rufai is in the custody of the commission in connection with ongoing investigations.”
