An Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has sentenced a 29-year-old pastor of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel), Ifa Ikot Ubo–Ifa Ikot Okpon branch, to death by hanging for the murder of his landlord.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The judgment, delivered on Thursday by Justice Gabriel Ette, found Prince Emmanuel Umoh guilty of killing Gabriel Bassey Edward, a 500-level Civil Engineering student at the University of Uyo. Edward’s results, released posthumously, showed he graduated with First Class honours.

Court records revealed that Edward had moved into his late mother’s property at Ifa Ikot Ubo to protect the estate and stay close to school. Before her death in December 2019, his mother had established a nursery school on the compound. Edward lived in a two-bedroom flat attached to a hall rented out to the church for ₦150,000 annually, with the agreement approved by his father, retired principal Emana Bassey Edward. Umoh was later posted as the branch’s first resident pastor.

Evidence presented in court showed that on December 21, 2020, Umoh was seen entering the compound. Neighbours reported hearing loud cries of “Jesus” from inside. The pastor later emerged in a white garment stained with blood, claiming he had fallen while hanging a banner. Edward was not seen alive again.

On December 26, 2020, Edward’s decomposing body was discovered in his room, wrapped in a mat with multiple deep cuts. A butcher’s knife was found beside him. Umoh, who was the last person seen with Edward, was arrested after blood stains were found on his clothing.

The pastor was arraigned on December 6, 2021, on a single count of murder and pleaded not guilty. During the trial, six witnesses, including Edward’s father, testified. It was revealed that disputes arose over the storage of church items in Edward’s flat and missing belongings, leading to further tension between the pastor and the deceased over hall rent and property access.

In a two-hour judgment, Justice Ette described the case as tragic, noting the late mother’s hard work in building the property for educational purposes. He ruled that the prosecution had proven the murder charge beyond a reasonable doubt, emphasizing that life is sacred and those who betray public trust, especially in religious roles, must face the law.

The court sentenced Prince Emmanuel Umoh to death by hanging.

No Need To Panic Over 2027 Election Postponement, SDP Assures Nigerians.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said there is no reason to fear that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will postpone the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, stated this during an interview with Vanguard on Wednesday, in response to reports suggesting that the electoral body might shift the presidential election scheduled for January 16.

Aiyenigba said the SDP had not seen any credible indication that INEC was considering postponing the polls.

“For the SDP, there is no justifiable reason to entertain fears that the Commission could be tempted to postpone the scheduled 2027 general elections,” he said.

The party spokesman also addressed concerns surrounding reports of Ebola, noting that health authorities had dismissed the public health fears associated with the outbreak.

According to him, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) had also strongly rejected claims that Ebola was being weaponised.

Aiyenigba maintained that the SDP had no credible reason to question INEC’s preparedness for the forthcoming elections.

“We are yet to have a credible reason to doubt the readiness of INEC for the general polls. The Commission has not given us any reason to be so concerned because there is no sign that surfaced,” he stated.

He further argued that the prevailing security situation had not reached a point that would justify postponing the elections.

Addressing concerns about the implementation of the Electoral Act 2026, particularly the delay in displaying the voters’ register, Aiyenigba said the issue had been addressed by the commission.

He explained that INEC had uploaded the preliminary voters’ register to its online portal, a move he said had helped resolve concerns over the delay.

“It is also necessary to note that the worries that have been variously expressed about the lack of implementation of the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, particularly the delay in the display of the voters’ register, have been addressed by the Commission with the online upload of the preliminary voters register on its portal,” he said.

The SDP spokesman added that although the party would continue to monitor developments, it remained optimistic that the 2027 general elections would take place as scheduled.

“While the SDP remains vigilant and will keep its eyes on the ball, the party remains optimistic and positive-minded that nothing will impede the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections,” he said.

Aiyenigba stressed that conducting the elections successfully, fairly and credibly was in the best interest of the country.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning campaign has been voted the greatest season in the history of the prestigious award in a fan poll organised by French magazine France Football to celebrate its 70th anniversary.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Portuguese superstar emerged at the top of the Ballon d’Or of All Time (BOAT) ranking, finishing ahead of Lionel Messi’s 2012 campaign, while Ronaldo’s 2017 triumph secured third place.

Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano announced the results on social media on Wednesday, October 28, following the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Messi’s 2023 campaign ranked fourth, while Ronaldo’s 2016 season came fifth. Other campaigns by the two football icons also featured prominently in the top 10, with Ronaldo’s 2014 and 2013 victories making the list alongside Messi’s 2015, 2011 and 2009 seasons.

The ranking featured 32 Ballon d’Or-winning campaigns involving 10 football legends, with fans voting for the individual seasons they considered the greatest in the award’s history.

Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 following an exceptional season with Manchester United, scoring 42 goals across all competitions and helping the English club secure both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.

The Portuguese forward also finished as the Premier League’s leading scorer with 31 goals and claimed the European Golden Shoe during the 2007/08 campaign.

His remarkable performances earned him 446 points in the original Ballon d’Or voting, placing him ahead of Messi, who finished second.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star went on to win the award four more times, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, taking his overall tally to five.

Messi, meanwhile, remains the competition’s most successful player, having won the Ballon d’Or a record eight times. His 2023 victory followed Argentina’s triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Elsewhere in the ranking, Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário’s 2002 campaign finished 13th, while Johan Cruyff’s 1974 season placed 17th. Michel Platini’s 1984 triumph came 18th, ahead of Franz Beckenbauer’s 1976 campaign.

The poll focused on individual Ballon d’Or-winning seasons rather than players’ overall careers. It was independent of the official annual award, which is determined by a jury of specialist journalists.
