“PDP In Chaos, Democracy At Risk” — Dan Ulasi.

Published

on

Dan Ulasi, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman in Anambra State, has raised alarms over the deepening crisis within the opposition party, warning that the escalating internal feud poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, Ulasi, a founding member of the PDP, expressed deep concern over what he described as the party’s descent into chaos, lamenting the loss of the “civility and loyalty” that once defined its leadership.

“I feel very emotional when PDP is discussed because back in 1998, I stood alongside the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme and others, while Atiku Abubakar stood on the other side, as we signed the formation of this party,” he said. “It is even more upsetting now that internal skirmishes have blown out of control.”

Ulasi criticised the current state of the party, noting that paranoia and hatred have replaced reasoned dialogue and that internal disputes have reached unprecedented levels.

“Democracy relies heavily on civility, and it seems civility has been lost—not just in PDP, but across the country. People no longer trust what the other says,” he said.

He also addressed recent court rulings and internal wrangling, emphasizing that the leadership of Abdurrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains legitimate despite competing claims.

Political Realignment Deepens As APC Emerges With 27 Governors Nationwide.

“As of now, there is only one PDP led by Alhaja Abdurrahman Mohammed as national chairman and Senator Sam Ayo as national secretary. Sadly, the crisis is disheartening, especially when young governors resort to insulting colleagues—it is uncalled for,” he said.

Ulasi also criticised former PDP governors who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as opportunists prioritising personal gain over party loyalty.

“Virtually all PDP governors have moved to the APC, even when the party was united. These are people who have benefited from PDP as governors, senators, and in other positions, yet make decisions based on convenience rather than principles,” he said.

He further lamented the influence of money in politics, warning that the monetisation of loyalty is eroding the party’s founding ideals.

“If you give me two billion naira, I will give President Tinubu a run for his money. Unfortunately, I don’t have the kind of money people use in politics today,” he joked.

On governance issues, Ulasi expressed frustration with the lack of basic public services, blaming both leadership failures and systemic problems.

“Water is not running anywhere. Governors move 40 vehicles to attend functions in their own cities. The problem is fundamental; Nigeria’s challenges are both structural and systemic,” he said.

‘We Must Build Opposition to Challenge APC in 2027’

Despite his criticism, Ulasi offered cautious optimism about PDP’s future, urging younger politicians to take up leadership and revamp the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I am encouraging young men to come forward and do something better for this country. We must have an effective opposition to give President Tinubu a strong challenge,” he said.

He also praised the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for notable improvements in Abuja’s infrastructure.

“Compare 80 years of previous leadership with just two and a half years under Wike—you will see significant progress in the FCT,” Ulasi said.

He concluded by calling on PDP to rebuild, reconcile, and return to its democratic roots, warning that failure to do so could render the party politically irrelevant by the next general elections.

“Until things normalise and we know who is left in the party, it is difficult to say if PDP can challenge APC in 2027. But we must be prepared,” he said.

Youths of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Yaba, Lagos State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The demonstration, which took place on Monday, called for the resignation of the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan.

The protesters carried placards with messages such as “ADC is not for sale,” “Amupitan is already compromised,” and “Democracy is dialogue, not monologue,” expressing their dissatisfaction with recent developments within the electoral body.

The protest was led by the party’s National Deputy Youth Leader, Adeola Olusi, under tight security presence.

Ahead of the demonstration, the party’s National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufai, announced on that similar protests would be held in Lagos and Ogun States under the banner “Operation Occupy INEC.”

He stated that the Lagos action was scheduled to begin at 8am at Yaba College of Technology, adding that the youth wing was taking a firm but peaceful stance on the issue.

According to him, the protesters were demanding respect for the rule of law, adherence to due process, the immediate resignation of Amupitan, and the reinstatement of the Senator David Mark-led leadership structure.

Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, has said the party has experienced a significant rise in new membership following recent actions involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, April 20, 2026, Abdullahi linked the surge in registrations to INEC’s recent decisions affecting prominent political figures.

He explained that interest in the party increased after actions involving figures such as David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, noting that many Nigerians are now more engaged in political developments.

According to him, citizens are increasingly joining political movements as they closely follow unfolding events and seek greater participation.

He said the situation has encouraged more political awareness, leading to a steady inflow of new members into the party.

The statement comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, with rival factions led by Nafiu Bala and David Mark both laying claim to the party’s structure.

The dispute, which began in July 2025 following a coalition takeover of the party, has resulted in prolonged legal battles.

Following a March 12 Court of Appeal judgment, INEC announced it would no longer recognise either faction. The Commission, through its National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, also stated it would not engage with the groups pending the outcome of a Federal High Court case.

According to the charge, the defendants allegedly conspired in 2025 to destabilise the Nigerian state and undermine the authority of the President.

It was further alleged that they planned actions intended to “levy war against the state to overawe the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” an offence punishable under the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors also claimed the accused had prior knowledge of a planned treasonable act involving Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji and others but failed to report it to the authorities or take steps to prevent it.

Beyond the treason allegations, they are also being prosecuted under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, for allegedly supporting and participating in activities linked to terrorism.

Two of the defendants, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim and Zekeri Umoru, were specifically accused of attending meetings allegedly connected to terrorist planning and ideological mobilisation aimed at destabilising the country’s constitutional order.

Bukar Kashim Goni was alleged to have retained ₦50 million suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, while Abdulkadir Sani was accused of holding ₦2 million from similar sources.
