NBA To Petition Police Over Kwankwaso’s Alleged Supreme Court Interference.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced plans to petition the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies over comments made by Rabiu Kwankwaso that the body says threaten public confidence in the judiciary.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Kwankwaso, National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), had claimed that he once accompanied Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to meet Supreme Court justices during the legal proceedings following the 2019 Kano governorship election.
The NBA’s National Executive Council (NEC), after reviewing the matter, described the remarks as deeply troubling and capable of “undermining public trust in the judiciary and the entire electoral justice system.”
In a statement shared on by Etaba Agbor, Secretary of the Young Lawyers’ Forum, the NBA said the NEC unanimously resolved to file a formal petition requesting a thorough investigation. The petition will not be limited to Kwankwaso alone, extending to anyone who has publicly admitted to improper access to judicial officers or undue influence over judicial decisions.
The NBA stressed that the petition is not a presumption of guilt but a necessary step to protect the integrity of the legal system. “The objective is to ensure that allegations of this gravity are subjected to thorough, impartial, and professional investigation,” the association said.
The body condemned both false and substantiated claims of judicial interference, noting that false claims “are dangerous and corrosive to constitutional democracy,” while proven claims must be met with accountability under the law.
The NEC directed the NBA leadership to formally notify the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies, seeking a comprehensive probe into Kwankwaso’s statements.
Kwankwaso made the claim while addressing supporters after Governor Yusuf’s recent defection to the APC, recounting that he allegedly took the governor to meet Supreme Court justices following the INEC’s declaration of the 2019 governorship election as inconclusive. The Supreme Court later upheld Abdullahi Ganduje’s victory, rejecting Yusuf’s petition.
The revelation has drawn widespread criticism from legal practitioners and rights advocates, raising concerns about the independence of Nigeria’s electoral judiciary.
Reiterating its commitment to the rule of law, the NBA said: “Only a robust, independent judiciary can guarantee democracy and uphold the rights of Nigerians.” The association pledged to pursue the matter fully to safeguard the sanctity of justice.

Following his departure from the ADC, Peter Obi was formally nominated as the NDC’s presidential candidate. In an interview with ARISE Television, Utomi explained that remaining in the ADC would have left Obi “trapped,” noting the controversial nature of that party’s presidential primary. Utomi highlighted that other aspirants, including Chibuike Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, had rejected the primary results and lodged complaints. Consequently, Utomi described Obi’s exit as a strategic and intelligent decision.
Regarding the broader political landscape, Utomi remarked:
-
While polling indicated that Obi would have won within the ADC, the prospect of the party leadership permitting a transparent process was doubtful.
-
He argued that the general management of primary processes across the political spectrum renders them a “complete farce”.
-
He further criticized these events as “make-believe” democratic processes, where candidates are often imposed upon the party.
