“INEC Can’t Pick PDP Leaders” – Makinde Faction Hits Back As Wike Team Joins Abuja Meeting
.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its handling of the party’s leadership dispute.
Reports recall that INEC held a meeting with political party leaders on Thursday, extending an invitation to the PDP faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to represent the party.
In response, the Turaki faction, through its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, described INEC’s action as disregarding ongoing court cases and warned that it could spark unrest. Ememobong added that the faction is considering legal action and accused INEC of bias, emphasizing that the commission has no authority to determine the authentic PDP leadership.
The statement further reassured party members, expressing confidence that the Court of Appeal will ultimately rule in favor of the Turaki faction.
“We are aware that the Independent National Electoral Commission invited leaders of political parties to a meeting and extended the invitation to some former members claiming to lead a so-called National Caretaker Committee, despite there being no such provision in our constitution,” the statement read.
“This action, though vexatious and potentially disruptive, will be met with all necessary legal responses. While not unexpected from the current INEC leadership, an impartial umpire would have considered the pending Court of Appeal matters, which will decisively affect this issue. INEC cannot choose our party’s leadership.
“We urge all our members to remain calm and hopeful that the Court of Appeal will soon resolve the leadership cases. The Rebirth Movement of our party, under the capable leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, remains strong and secure, and will overcome these challenges to present a united, credible alternative to the ruling party that has brought suffering to Nigerians,” the statement added.

In an interview with ARISE Television, Utomi explained that remaining in the ADC would have left Obi “trapped,” noting the controversial nature of that party’s presidential primary. Utomi highlighted that other aspirants, including Chibuike Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, had rejected the primary results and lodged complaints. Consequently, Utomi described Obi’s exit as a strategic and intelligent decision.
Regarding the broader political landscape, Utomi remarked:
-
While polling indicated that Obi would have won within the ADC, the prospect of the party leadership permitting a transparent process was doubtful.
-
He argued that the general management of primary processes across the political spectrum renders them a “complete farce”.
-
He further criticized these events as “make-believe” democratic processes, where candidates are often imposed upon the party.
