“2027: Kwankwaso Pauses ADC Move Over Peter Obi’s Ticket Uncertainty”.
Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has postponed his planned defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid lingering questions over the party’s presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Sources within both the Kwankwasiya Movement and the ADC revealed that Kwankwaso’s move was linked to a proposed alliance with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on a joint 2027 ticket—an arrangement reportedly facilitated by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
An ADC official confirmed ongoing discussions, noting that Kwankwaso has yet to commit due to unresolved issues.
“We’re closing in on Kwankwaso, and we will be happy to receive him. Our committees met a few days ago and are scheduled to meet next week to take, maybe, a decisive decision. Discussions are ongoing, though some issues remain unresolved,” the official said.
Sources within Kwankwaso’s camp revealed that uncertainty over Obi’s chances of securing the ADC presidential ticket is a key factor delaying the defection.
“One of the main considerations is that northern leaders and Obasanjo are advising RMK on his move. Kwankwaso appears to be the bargaining strength for Peter Obi to secure the ADC ticket, so the strategy must be carefully planned,” the source explained.
“ADC leaders are pressuring RMK to join, and while he is interested, we don’t want to play into the hands of forces supporting Atiku’s presidency. From the outside, it seems Obi was lured into the party, and we must be cautious. The plan could be for Obi to participate in the ADC primary, lose to Atiku, and then take the VP slot—but how far Obi will go, we don’t know.
“We believe the South should complete its eight years, achievable only through Obi, which positions Kwankwaso well for a 2031 run,” the source added.
The camps of Obi and Kwankwaso have reportedly met with key national leaders to build support for Obi’s presidential ambition.
“Without wider consultations, the defection might not happen. RMK is still consulting, and until those consultations are concluded, nothing serious will occur. He remains Obi’s strongest bargaining chip for the ADC presidential ticket, though politics is dynamic,” the source said.
Both the ADC and NNPP spokespeople declined to comment. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi acknowledged Kwankwaso’s political influence but said he was not involved in negotiations. NNPP spokesperson Ladipo Johnson also said he had no useful information to share on the matter.
