News reports that Abdullahi shared this account on Tuesday in Abuja during the public launch of his memoir, The Loyalist: A Memoir of Service and Sacrifice.

Abdullahi, who served as Minister of Youth Development and later as Minister of Sports under Jonathan, was relieved of his duties in March 2014. He explained that his refusal to join in personal attacks against Saraki—despite pressure from party leaders at a campaign event—led to his dismissal. At the time, Saraki was the governor of Kwara State, and Abdullahi had previously served him as special assistant on communication, special adviser on policy, and commissioner for education.

While delivering a vote of thanks at the event, Abdullahi disclosed that he began writing the book in 2019 to document how personal and political relationships evolved during his time serving Saraki. He revealed that the memoir was initially titled In the Shadow of the Godfather and highlighted his loyalty to Saraki, especially during the period when Saraki left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi recounted the events of March 2014, when former President Jonathan visited Kwara for a campaign rally. As the state’s highest-ranking PDP official and a sitting minister, he was expected to coordinate the president’s campaign efforts locally. However, multiple speakers, including governors, used the platform to attack Saraki. Abdullahi refused to participate in the verbal assaults, a decision that put him at odds with influential figures in the party and ultimately cost him his job.

He explained, “Dr. Saraki had just left PDP for APC, but I was still serving in President Jonathan’s cabinet. As the highest-ranking political office holder in Kwara, I was expected to lead the campaign attacks. But I saw no reason to get involved in a fight that was not mine. Saraki has been my benefactor; he has not wronged me. I knew I would lose my job and even warned my wife and aides to prepare for it.”

Abdullahi added that after the rally, while on an official trip to London, he began receiving messages confirming that he had been dismissed from his ministerial post.
