2027 Elections: Arewa Forum Raises Alarm Over PDP Defections, Hints at Growing Authoritarianism

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has voiced serious concerns over the increasing wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), cautioning that such moves may signal Nigeria’s gradual descent into authoritarian rule.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in an interview with Daily Sun, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, described the defections—particularly by governors—as unsurprising but deeply troubling. He pointed out that although some of these defections remain speculative, the defection of the Delta State Governor has already occurred, while the Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, recently reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP.

Professor Muhammad-Baba emphasized the ongoing structural and ideological weakening of the PDP since the 2023 elections, highlighting that several of its prominent members now openly align with the APC. He specifically mentioned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who still claims PDP membership but appears more loyal to the APC than many of its core members.

He went further to allege that the APC-led government is deploying state resources to influence political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, allegedly using incentives such as automatic tickets to lure back key figures into the APC fold.

“The administration appears determined to consolidate power by coercing or enticing governors and lawmakers to cross over,” he noted, warning that the electorate’s ability to make free choices might be compromised. “If only voters are allowed to truly decide. But that possibility is becoming increasingly remote.”

Concluding with a note of caution, Muhammad-Baba added, “Let us wait and see. This is a sad political development, and unfortunately, it may continue.
