“2027: APC Tightens Grip on Populous States, Leaving Opposition Scrambling”.
The 2027 general election is shaping up to be a major challenge for Nigeria’s opposition, as President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to consolidate power across key states.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
While Tinubu’s APC strengthens its hold on highly populated regions, the opposition struggles to unite behind a single candidate, with internal divisions and defections undermining their chances.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), formed as a coalition platform for opposition leaders to challenge Tinubu’s re-election, is currently grappling with internal disagreements. Supporters of leading aspirants are clashing over who should represent the party, complicating efforts to present a united front.
Other parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), continue to experience internal crises, further encouraging defections to the ruling APC.
Continuous Defections
Since late 2025, opposition ranks have thinned as governors, lawmakers, and local government chairmen switched to the APC. At the start of Tinubu’s administration in May 2023, the ruling party controlled 21 states, while opposition parties held 15. Today, APC governs 29 states, leaving the opposition with just seven—PDP controls five, while APGA, LP, and Accord Party hold one state each.
Kano: The Political Nerve Centre
Kano remains a critical battleground, with nearly six million registered voters capable of swinging elections. Both APC and opposition parties have vied for control of the state, until recently, when Governor Abba Yusuf resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the APC.
In the 2023 presidential election, NNPP candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso defeated Tinubu in Kano with 997,279 votes to APC’s 517,341. Some analysts believe Yusuf’s defection could boost Tinubu’s 2027 prospects, while others argue Kwankwaso’s loyal supporters could still challenge APC dominance. There are also indications Kwankwaso may join the opposition coalition ahead of the election.
Cracks Within the Opposition
Internal disputes within the ADC threaten to weaken the opposition further. Key figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi—are competing for the party’s presidential ticket, with supporters of Obi advocating for a Southern zoning. A faction led by Nafiu Gombe has also emerged, heightening tensions.
Enejo Micheal, an ADC chieftain in Benue State, told DAILY POST that President Tinubu’s administration deliberately weakened opposition parties to encourage defections to the APC.
“They have even created factions within the ADC. You will see what happens if someone like Peter Obi, whom they fear, wins the ADC ticket later this year,” Micheal said.
He added, “Tinubu and his allies may sponsor rival claims within ADC and try to use the courts to disqualify our candidate. But no matter the strategy, I don’t see Tinubu winning next year. ADC leaders, like David Mark, are experienced and know how to handle these crises.”
Micheal also urged supporters to avoid clashing on social media, stressing that the party is committed to direct primaries. “Nobody is buying delegates with dollars in ADC. We are appealing to leaders to adopt direct primaries, and I bet Obi will win the ticket,” he concluded.
