Tensions Rise As South Africa’s Minister Vows To Stop Nigeria from 2026 World Cup.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has stirred controversy after declaring that he does not want Nigeria’s Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His comments have sparked reactions across the continent amid the lingering rivalry between both nations during the qualification series.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, McKenzie made the bold statement during an interview shared on by South African sports journalist Robert Marawa. The minister was reacting to Nigeria’s reported involvement in a protest that led to sanctions against South Africa during the qualifiers.

South Africa were docked three points and three goals after FIFA ruled that they had fielded an ineligible player in a match against Lesotho. Nigeria, among other nations, had petitioned FIFA to take disciplinary action, a move that seemingly irked McKenzie.

Despite the punishment, Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana still managed to top Group C, narrowly finishing one point ahead of Nigeria — a situation that left tensions high between supporters of both nations.

“I heard you saying we (South Africa) will support Nigeria, but I want to be very clear — I don’t want them to qualify,” McKenzie stated. “They tried things behind the scenes. I want them to lose. Nigeria must not go to the World Cup. Let another African country represent the continent.”

Nigeria, who missed out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, are now fighting hard to book a place at the 2026 edition, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Super Eagles must progress through the CAF play-offs scheduled for November 2025 and the FIFA intercontinental play-offs in March 2026.

Meanwhile, South Africa have already secured their qualification and are gearing up for their first World Cup appearance since hosting the global event in 2010.

In an official update shared via its verified social media channel, the NAF stated that this strategic deployment is designed to strengthen aerial surveillance, maintain constant pressure on criminal networks, and improve the operational response time of security forces.

Given that criminal elements frequently exploit challenging terrains and mobility to evade ground troops, the deployment of rapid air assets aims to locate, disrupt, and restrict enemy movement.
