EFCC Explains Why High-Profile Corruption Trials Take Longer To Reach Court.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has clarified that delays in prosecuting certain high-profile corruption cases are largely due to the extensive time required to gather credible, admissible, and cross-border evidence.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the Chairman of the commission, Ola Olukoyede, explained that investigations involving politically exposed persons and large-scale public corruption demand painstaking scrutiny, particularly when funds and assets are traced across multiple jurisdictions.
Speaking during a televised interview on Sunday, Olukoyede said the complexity of such cases makes them fundamentally different from cybercrime investigations, which can often be concluded within a short period. He noted that while cybercrime suspects can sometimes be investigated and arraigned within 48 hours, corruption cases involving influential figures require far more detailed preparation to ensure successful prosecution.
He stressed that the time taken before charges are filed does not indicate inactivity or an attempt to shield suspects from justice. Rather, he said the commission avoids going to court until investigations are sufficiently concluded to withstand legal scrutiny.
The EFCC chairman also dismissed allegations that the agency selectively targets opposition figures while protecting politically powerful individuals, describing such claims as unfounded and contrary to the commission’s statutory mandate.
Addressing claims of political persecution by a former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, Olukoyede maintained that the commission’s actions were not driven by personal or political motives. He insisted that all cases are handled strictly within the bounds of the law.
Olukoyede further emphasised that Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign can only succeed if it is conducted without partisanship, urging Nigerians to support a fair and impartial approach to the fight against corruption.
