Former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim has broken his silence following the attack on his convoy by gunmen on Monday.

The former governor narrowly missed death when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Imo State’s Ehime Mbano Local Government Area.
Ohakim claimed that his attackers were experts, not amateurs, while recounting his ordeal following the heinous assault.
“We were on our way from Isiala Mbano to Ehime Mbano. These people stopped us in the town of Umualumaku.
“They ambushed us from behind and kept firing at our cars. I thought I was dead, and I was with my two children, a son and a daughter.
The bulletproof car saved my life.
I am alive today thanks to God’s special mercy and the bulletproof automobile.

“Unfortunately for me, they killed four of our boys, including the driver. Yes, we did lose four of the boys, and I am heartbroken. How is that possible? “What crime have they committed?”

Even after his own driver managed to flee the scene, the perpetrators pursued his vehicle, according to Ohakim.

“They pursued us and kept shooting at our tires. Fortunately, the vehicle has run-flat tyres, which allow you to continue driving even after a puncture.
As a result, even when they fired at the tyres in an attempt to immobilize us, the vehicle continued to move.
 
The driver, who displayed a fantastic level of driving expertise, kept maneuvering until he lost them at a junction when he went right and, not knowing where we had gone, they continued on the road to Umuahia in the opposite direction.

“We then turned around and returned to my house.
We were present when the Imo Government House dispatched reinforcements from Owerri, who carried the bodies of my security personnel.”

Ohakim, who observed the assailants, stated that they were not amateurs.

“I must add that this goes beyond the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). These are well-trained specialists. They are not regular folks. They were driving a brand new BMW 5-series in blue. They came to murder me.”

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

  • Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

  • The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

  • Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
