According to Nivo News, Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has launched an internal investigation into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following allegations of medical negligence made against the facility.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The development comes amid intense public reaction online after Adichie accused hospital personnel of professional lapses that she believes led to her son’s death. In a detailed account shared on social media, Adichie explained that Nkanu was taken to Euracare for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line ahead of a planned medical evacuation to the United States.

She stated that her son initially showed symptoms resembling a cold during the festive period but was later diagnosed with a serious infection. According to her, the child had first received treatment at Atlantis Hospital in Lekki and was scheduled to travel to the U.S. with medical support, following recommendations from specialists at Johns Hopkins Hospital, who requested specific diagnostic procedures before evacuation.

Adichie said the family was directed to Euracare after being informed that the hospital was best equipped to handle the required procedures. Upon arrival, they were told that the child would be sedated to prevent movement during the MRI and central line insertion. However, she alleged that the anaesthesiologist administered an excessive dose of propofol and failed to properly monitor the child afterward.

She recounted noticing unusual activity in the operating area and was later informed that her son had become unresponsive after receiving the sedative but was resuscitated. The situation reportedly worsened as the child was placed on a ventilator, transferred to intensive care, and later suffered seizures and cardiac arrest, eventually passing away hours later.

Adichie further alleged that her son was not monitored after sedation, claiming that basic medical protocols were ignored. She also accused the anaesthesiologist of turning off her son’s oxygen after the procedure and described the incident as a case of criminal negligence, noting that the child had been stable before the intervention and was expected to travel the following day.

She raised additional concerns about the anaesthesiologist’s past conduct, alleging previous cases involving the overdosing of children, and questioned why the hospital allowed the individual to continue practicing.

In response, Euracare expressed condolences to the family but rejected claims that the child’s death resulted from medical negligence. The hospital stated that the patient was critically ill and had received treatment at multiple facilities before being referred for specific diagnostic procedures. It maintained that care was provided in line with established clinical protocols and international standards, including the use of sedation where medically necessary.

The hospital added that it worked closely with external medical teams recommended by the family and provided all required clinical support. Euracare confirmed that it has commenced a detailed investigation under its clinical governance framework and pledged full cooperation with relevant regulatory authorities, emphasizing its commitment to patient safety and responsible handling of the matter.
