Ogun Villages Under Threat: Traditional Leaders Warn Against Forced Evictions.
Communities in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State have appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene following reports of a planned demolition of their villages for land acquisition. According to Nivo News, about 15 communities, including Itori Mogan, Laaki, Jaguna, Ogunu, Paashi, Kumapayi, and Abule Odo in Ijemoland, face the threat of forced eviction.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The residents claim their villages, which have existed for over 300 years, were excised during former Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s administration. They allege that the state government, acting through the Planning and Development Permit Authority, Abeokuta Metro Zonal Planning Office, served a demolition notice on Itori Mogan on January 9, 2026, citing alleged violations of the Ogun State Land Use Act in Hillcrest Estate. Occupiers were reportedly given a three-day ultimatum to vacate their homes.
Speaking on behalf of the affected communities, the Baale of Ogunro, Chief Olakunle Bodunde, decried the move, stating that the issue is already in court and that several meetings with government officials had not resolved the matter. “We have taken significant steps to address this issue. The court has not made a pronouncement yet, but demolition notices have been pasted on our buildings,” he said.
Chief Oludare Salako, Baale of Itori Mogan, warned that the communities’ ancestral gods cannot be relocated and that forced evictions could have serious consequences. He appealed directly to Governor Abiodun for urgent intervention, expressing confidence that the governor may not be aware of the situation.
High Chief Oluyinka Kufile, Aro of Egbaland and Oluwo of Ijemo, urged residents to pursue dialogue with government authorities, emphasizing that exercising their rights through proper channels remains key. “If you have a right, no government will stop you from exercising it. Engage with the authorities, make inquiries, and seek clarification on this matter,” he advised.
