According to Nivo News, the announcement was made in a statement on Thursday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba. The change is intended to honour both serving members of the Nigerian Armed Forces and those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

The Federal Government set aside January 15 each year to acknowledge the bravery, dedication, and sacrifices of military personnel in protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and safeguarding lives and property. The revised designation underscores the dual purpose of the day: celebrating the contributions of active service members while remembering fallen heroes.

Traditionally, the observance includes a week of activities culminating in a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony on January 15. Defence Headquarters has urged the media and the public to adopt the updated name in all references and coverage. The Armed Forces also expressed appreciation to the media for its support in addressing insecurity nationwide and pledged continued cooperation to ensure national security.
