A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by National Chairman Nafiu Gombe, has denied reports suggesting that it is seeking the support of prominent political figures ahead of the 2027 general election. The claims had implicated former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader Rabiu Kwankwaso.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Gombe described the reports as baseless and emphasised that the party remains focused on building an independent political platform. He called on members and the public to disregard the circulating rumours and reaffirmed that the ADC is committed to strengthening its ideological foundation.

“The ADC’s focus remains on building a strong, independent, and ideologically driven platform,” Gombe stated. He further clarified that party decisions would strictly follow the ADC constitution and internal procedures, noting that only registered and financially compliant members are eligible to participate in party elections or congresses.

To reinforce internal democracy, Gombe announced the inauguration of Zonal Congress Committees across three key geopolitical zones. The South-West Zonal Congress Committee was inaugurated in Ekiti State on January 7, 2026, with Bala Sani as chairman and Kyauta Yakubu heading the Appeal Committee. On the same day, the South-East Zonal Congress Committee was inaugurated in Enugu State, chaired by Adamu Ado Dauda, with Mrs. Iyabo Alibi leading the Appeal Committee. The North-Central Zonal Congress Committee was inaugurated on January 5, 2026, with Lolo Ehirudu as chairman and Hon. Sa’ad Aboki heading the Appeal Committee.

Gombe’s clarification comes amid growing competition within opposition politics as the ADC’s presidential primary for 2027 gains momentum. High-profile politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, have publicly indicated interest in securing the party’s nomination. Atiku, the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, has insisted he will contest the ADC ticket, dismissing calls for him to step aside and warning that such pressures threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi, who ran as the Labour Party candidate in 2023, and Amaechi, a former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, have also expressed intentions to contest the ADC presidential primary. The moves signal an increasingly competitive opposition landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
