According to Nivo News, the pair are facing allegations of diverting ₦5.78 billion during Ahmed’s administration. During Thursday’s hearing before Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar, the sixth prosecution witness testified that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained bank statements linked to loans used to pay teachers’ salaries under the State Universal Basic Education Board. These statements, together with documents on matching grants from the Universal Basic Education Commission, were submitted as evidence.

The proceedings were delayed following a dispute over the organization of the evidence. Defence counsel Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) argued that the documents provided were not properly paginated or arranged, making it difficult to respond effectively. Prosecution counsel Rotimi Jacobs maintained that the documents were correctly served but acknowledged that they had not been organized for the defence.

Justice Abdulgafar adjourned the case to allow both parties time to properly arrange the evidence. The EFCC alleged that Ahmed and Banu approved the use of UBEC matching grants for civil servant salaries, a purpose outside the intended scope of the funds. Earlier, the state’s former Accountant-General testified that ₦1 billion from UBEC grants was borrowed in 2015 to pay civil servants and pensioners.
