Security sources disclosed that operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team apprehended Dr Tombari Joseph Gbeneol, a medical doctor and founder of Life Forte Chapel Church in Port Harcourt, in connection with the alleged plot.
Investigators revealed that the arrest followed the interception of a telephone conversation between Gbeneol and the immediate past Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo. During the intercepted exchange, the suspects allegedly discussed plans to engage foreign nationals to carry out the assassination, with further discussions reportedly centring on approaching Governor Fubara for financial backing to execute the plan.
A senior security source described the contents of the intercepted conversation as a serious national security concern, prompting swift intervention by the Intelligence Response Team.
Following the intelligence report, IRT operatives led by Commissioner of Police Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi reportedly moved in and arrested Gbeneol, who has remained in custody for approximately two weeks as investigations continue.
Security officials also confirmed that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend Danagogo, who is said to have gone into hiding since the allegations surfaced.
Confirming the development, the Nigeria Police stated that the suspect is currently in custody, while investigations remain ongoing. Authorities declined to disclose further details, noting that detectives are still working to fully establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations and identify any additional individuals who may be linked to the case.
