Governor Abba Yusuf’s Defection: Vested Rights Trump Godfather Control In Kano.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, the ongoing political drama in Kano State highlights a clash between vested rights and vested interests, centered on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his long-time political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Their decades-long relationship, marked by loyalty and mentorship, saw Yusuf rise through the ranks—from serving as Personal Assistant and Commissioner for Works to becoming Governor of Kano State in 2023 under the Kwankwasiyya Movement.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

While Yusuf’s loyalty to Kwankwaso was unquestionable, his assumption of governorship carries constitutional authority derived from the people, not from his political godfather. His insistence on independent decision-making, policy formulation, and appointment of officials reflects his legal and democratic rights rather than defiance.

Conversely, some members of the Kwankwasiyya inner circle appear to have expected absolute control over Yusuf’s administration, adhering to the entrenched logic of godfatherism: “I made you; therefore, I control you.” Sources indicate that tension grew as Yusuf pursued projects, built his own political profile, and asserted autonomy, which some perceived as a threat.

This conflict is believed to have contributed to resistance against Yusuf’s second-term ambitions within the NNPP, including factional disputes, litigations, and alleged attempts to deny him the party ticket. Reports suggest that Yusuf’s contemplated defection to the APC is not impulsive but a calculated response to maintain political agency and secure his administration’s future. His consultations with lawmakers, local government officials, and federal representatives underscore this strategic approach.

Political analysts note that similar godfather-godson conflicts in other states, such as Rivers and Benue, have historically destabilized governance and fragmented parties. Yusuf’s defection is being viewed as an assertion of democratic governance over personal political interests, emphasizing that leadership should serve the electorate rather than sustain personal legacies.

Ultimately, Yusuf’s decision underscores the importance of political maturity, independence, and accountability, with Kano State’s future hinging on service delivery rather than the dynamics of personal loyalty or control.

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
