Thousands of Prisoners to Be Released Early Amid Overcrowding Crisis....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Thousands of prisoners in British jails were set for early release on Tuesday as part of a government initiative to tackle severe overcrowding in the prison system. Recent statistics revealed that the prison population in England and Wales has reached an all-time high, prompting urgent action from officials.

Business Minister Jonathan Reynolds described the decision to release approximately 1,700 prisoners as “difficult.” The government has assured the public that violent offenders and domestic abusers would not be eligible for early release, aiming to alleviate concerns about the potential for reoffending among released individuals.

In a statement to Sky News, Reynolds emphasized the need for this policy to prevent “unchecked criminality,” which could arise if newly convicted individuals are spared jail time due to a lack of available prison space. He attributed some of the current challenges to the previous Conservative government, asserting that decisions regarding prison management “should have been made prior to the election.” Reynolds expressed that the state of the prison system is one of the most pressing issues inherited by the current administration.

Chief Inspector of Probation Martin Jones echoed these concerns on BBC radio, stating that the pressure on prisons is “extreme.” He noted, “It’s the highest population we’ve ever seen in this country. Prisons are absolutely close to 100 percent capacity.” According to Jones, only a few hundred spaces remain available, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Jones also highlighted the likelihood of reoffending, mentioning that around one-third of individuals released from prison each year are likely to commit further offenses within a year. Despite this, Reynolds reassured the public that increased protections are in place, confirming that no violent offenders or domestic abusers would be included in the early release program.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
