September Election Was Rigged!’ – Ighodalo Reacts Angrily to Supreme Court Decision

According to reports, Ighodalo expressed his disappointment in a statement issued on Thursday titled “Final Statement on the Supreme Court Judgement in the Edo Governorship Election Petition.” While acknowledging the finality of the apex court’s decision, he argued that it failed to deliver genuine justice.
“Though I accept the finality of its judgment,” Ighodalo stated, “I do not and cannot pretend that what was delivered amounts to justice.”
The Supreme Court, led by a five-member panel headed by Justice Mohammed Garba, had dismissed Ighodalo’s appeal on the grounds that he failed to provide credible evidence of electoral malpractices. The ruling upheld the earlier decisions of the Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, both of which had declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, the rightful winner of the September 2024 election.
However, in his reaction, Ighodalo alleged that the people’s mandate had been brazenly stolen and that Nigeria’s democratic institutions had failed in their duty.
“What occurred in the September 2024 governorship election was not a democratic contest,” he said. “It was a robbery—coordinated, deliberate, and now, tragically endorsed by the highest court in the land.”
He added, “Like many of you, I feel deeply betrayed—not only by those who manipulated the process but also by the very institutions we believed would safeguard our democracy.”
The PDP candidate asserted that both the electoral process and the judiciary had failed the people of Edo, insisting that the outcome did not reflect the electorate’s true will.
“You turned out in hope,” Ighodalo lamented. “You voted for competence, progress, and prosperity. But now, we’re being told that your voices don’t matter. That your freely given mandate can be trampled on without consequence.”
While encouraging his supporters to remain steadfast, Ighodalo warned that the implications of what he termed an “illegitimate mandate” would soon become evident through poor governance and worsening hardship.
“The weight of this illegitimacy,” he said, “will be felt not just in the symbolism of the court’s ruling, but in the lived reality of Edo people—in the void of leadership, the poverty of policies, and the daily suffering of our citizens.”
He concluded with a message to those now in office: “To those who now wield power undeservedly, lead with humility. Govern with conscience. History sees what the courts may overlook. And in time, it will pass its own verdict.”
