According to reports obtained on Thursday, the attack occurred at approximately 4:38 p.m. on Tuesday. At least three officers are still unaccounted for, while two others sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment.
The patrol team—comprising personnel from the Police Mobile Force (13 PMF and 58 PMF), State Intelligence Services (SIS), Operation Zenda, Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), NSCDC, Benue State Civil Protection Guards, and local vigilante groups—was responding to distress calls about houses being set ablaze in Udei village when they came under fire.
According to Daily Trust, the team was ambushed near Ukohol community along the Makurdi-Lafia highway while en route to the affected area. During the intense firefight, Police Inspector Ochepo Benjamin and an unnamed NSCDC operative suffered bullet injuries and were rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi for urgent care.
However, the whereabouts of Police Inspector Muhammed Abdullahi and two other NSCDC officers remain unknown as of press time.
NSCDC Confirms Deaths
Speaking to journalists, NSCDC spokesperson Michael Ejelikwu confirmed the loss of two officers, identifying them as Adoli Simon and Ernest Tyolumun Ayilla, both of the Assistant Superintendent Cadre I (ASCI).
“With a heavy heart, I confirm the tragic loss of two gallant officers—Adoli Simon and Ernest Tyolumun Ayilla—who were killed in action while participating in a joint security operation at Udei, Guma LGA, on July 8, 2025, around 16:38 hours,” Ejelikwu said.
He added, “Despite these relentless and coordinated attacks by killer herdsmen and their collaborators, the NSCDC remains undeterred. Alongside sister agencies, we will continue to uphold the territorial integrity and internal security of Nigeria.”
As of the time of this report, the Benue State Police Command has not released an official statement on the incident.
The ambush marks the latest in a string of violent clashes between security forces and armed groups in Benue State, where ongoing tensions between farmers and suspected herders continue to fuel insecurity.
