Youth Murdered, Homes Torched In Ohafia Crisis, Police Make Arrests.
A youth, identified as Mr. Igwe Akuma from Ndi Uma compound, was killed on Friday during a violent outbreak in Okon-Aku community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. According to a statement from the Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, and the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, the murder of Akuma, who was reportedly due to be married in a few days, is condemned in the strongest terms. The traditional leaders expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and stressed that no provocation justifies such acts of violence.
“The Udumeze condemns in its entirety the gruesome murder of a young Ohafian who was said to be getting married in a few days,” the statement read, emphasizing that killing and destruction are not acceptable ways to begin a new year. The council appealed for calm between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds and noted that efforts are ongoing with security agencies to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of Abia State, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said officers from the Ohafia Divisional Headquarters, led by the DPO, have arrested several suspects. Two police tactical teams were deployed to the scene to restore and maintain law and order, and the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation.
