According to party sources, Chibike Ikenga, the state Publicity Secretary of the APC, said in an interview that Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC was approved at the highest level and that the governor’s political trajectory now rests with the national leadership.
“We allowed him to join the party; the President allowed him to join, and the President is the leader and controls the party. So, at that level, they know what he deserves, and once we get the directive from there, we will hit the road,” Ikenga stated.
While recognizing that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike played a role in Fubara’s rise, Ikenga emphasized that political disagreements are being managed by party leaders and dismissed suggestions that Wike could influence APC’s choice of gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State.
“Wike is not a member of the APC and he is not contesting the governorship seat in the state, so why do people want to jump the gun?” he added.
