According to Nivo News, the Defence Headquarters has intensified surveillance operations to track Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters who are reportedly fleeing their enclaves following recent United States airstrikes on terrorist targets in parts of northern Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Nivo News gathered that the US strikes, announced by President Donald Trump on Christmas Day, targeted Islamic State elements operating in north-western Nigeria. The Federal Government later confirmed the operation, describing it as part of sustained counterterrorism cooperation between Nigeria and the United States. In the aftermath of the strikes, reports emerged of armed groups relocating to other areas in an apparent bid to evade further attacks.

Community leaders in parts of Benue and Sokoto states reportedly raised concerns over unusual movements by armed elements, with some describing an influx of suspected fighters into rural communities and forest corridors. Observers noted that some of the groups appeared to be moving in smaller units, while others were believed to be attempting to cross into neighbouring border areas.

However, senior military sources told Nivo News that the Nigerian Armed Forces are fully aware of these movements and are actively monitoring fleeing terrorists. The officials disclosed that intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations are ongoing to track their locations and prevent them from regrouping or launching fresh attacks.

Meanwhile, the US strikes have sparked debate among retired senior military officers over the possibility of deploying American troops on Nigerian soil. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, recently stated that the Ministry of Defence would advise the government on any next steps regarding deeper military cooperation.

A retired senior officer, Brigadier-General Peter Aro, expressed strong opposition to the deployment of foreign troops, warning that such a move could carry serious legal, diplomatic, and social consequences. He argued that Nigeria possesses sufficient ground forces and that external support should be limited to areas such as air power, surveillance, and precision strike capabilities, while land operations remain under Nigerian control to preserve legitimacy and national cohesion.

In contrast, another retired officer, Brigadier-General Bashir Adewinbi, supported closer security collaboration with the United States, noting that international military cooperation is a common practice. He linked the Christmas Day strikes to ongoing joint efforts and said any deployment, if deemed necessary, should follow due diplomatic procedures with clearly defined terms of engagement.

Also weighing in, Major General Dayo Olukoju urged caution, stressing that strategic errors must be avoided at such a critical time. Similarly, a former Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, Group Captain Sadique Shehu, criticised calls for foreign troops to fight on Nigerian soil, describing the idea as troubling and unnecessary. He maintained that while Nigeria could benefit from foreign technology and advisory support, it should not rely on external soldiers to prosecute its internal security challenges.

Shehu also noted that there was no confirmed information on casualties from the reported US strikes, adding that Nigeria must clearly define and communicate the terms of any foreign assistance to its citizens, rather than allowing information to come solely from foreign governments.

Meanwhile, a United States congressman, Riley Moore, defended President Trump’s actions, stating that the airstrikes were aimed at restoring peace and security, particularly for communities facing severe violence. He said the coordinated operation had offered renewed hope to many Nigerians affected by terrorism.

The Ute Okpu Kingdom in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State has suspended the burial of late Dr Chamberlain Nnamdi Dunkwu pending the outcome of an independent autopsy to determine the actual cause of his death.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Dr Dunkwu, who served until March 7, 2026, as Deputy Chief of Staff (Legislative) to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has been at the centre of growing concerns within his community over the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The community dismissed reports suggesting that burial arrangements had already been concluded, describing them as false and misleading amid rising suspicions about how he died.

This position was contained in a joint statement issued by the Obi of Ute Okpu Kingdom, the Elders-in-Council, traditional chiefs, youth groups, the Uwizimas, and members of the Dunkwu family led by Chief Augustine Dunkwu.

Community leaders called on relevant authorities, including the Nigeria Police, the Ministry of Health, and other government agencies, to urgently ensure an independent medical examination is carried out.

They emphasised that no burial date has been fixed, stressing that burial will remain on hold until a full autopsy is completed to establish the true cause of death.

According to the statement, the decision was based on cultural, legal, and emotional considerations, noting that the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear and require proper investigation.

The community also argued that an autopsy is necessary to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future, insisting that any wrongdoing must not go unaddressed.

Citing traditional beliefs, they maintained that their customs do not permit the burial of any person whose death is surrounded by doubt, stating that truth must precede burial rites.

On legal grounds, the statement referenced standard procedures for sudden or unexplained deaths, calling for compliance with relevant coroner laws and medical protocols that require autopsy in such cases.

The community reaffirmed its willingness to cooperate fully with investigative authorities, stressing that it is not opposing burial but insisting on due process and clarity.

They further stated that once the autopsy is concluded and findings are released, a proper and dignified burial would be conducted.

The statement ended with a unified stance from all stakeholders in Ute Okpu Kingdom: “In the interest of justice, tradition, and the safety of our people, we stand united: No autopsy, no burial.”
