Flight-tracking data and security analysts revealed that a Gulfstream V aircraft, commonly adapted for advanced intelligence missions, was observed conducting operations over Borno State on Saturday. The aircraft is believed to be part of renewed efforts targeting the Islamic State West Africa Province, the ISIS-linked group active in Nigeria’s northeast and the Lake Chad region.
Security analysts explained that the surveillance flights focused on militant activity around the Sambisa Forest axis, noting that the operations resumed after a brief pause following the recent air strikes in Sokoto. The intelligence mission is said to be aimed at gathering actionable data on terrorist movements and operational networks.
Available tracking information indicated that the United States began sustained intelligence flights over Nigeria from November 24, with the aircraft departing from Ghana, which serves as a key logistical base for US military operations in Africa. Since then, the aircraft has reportedly operated over Nigerian territory on an almost daily basis.
Further details linked the aircraft to Tenax Aerospace, a firm known for providing specialised mission aircraft in collaboration with the US military. Around the same period, a former American official disclosed that the surveillance flights were also tasked with monitoring militant groups and supporting efforts to locate a US pilot abducted in neighbouring Niger Republic.
The resumption of intelligence flights followed high-level security talks between Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the United States Defence Secretary, Pete Hegseth, in Washington. The engagement came shortly after remarks from the Pentagon signalling a more aggressive partnership with Nigerian authorities to counter extremist violence.
The recent air strike in Sokoto marked the first concrete action linked to US President Donald Trump’s pledge to confront jihadist threats in Nigeria, with indications that further operations could be carried out as intelligence efforts continue.
