The assurance was given by the Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, following an inspection tour of medical and health sciences facilities at the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna), and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, both located in Niger State. The minister stated that deliberate efforts are underway to train and retain more healthcare professionals to close the gap created by the mass departure of doctors from the country.

Professor Pate, who was represented by the Director of Hospital Services, Dr. Jimoh Salawudeen, led a team that also pledged the Federal Government’s support for the planned collaboration between FUTMinna and FMC Bida to establish a Faculty of Medical Sciences and Health Technology. The initiative is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare delivery in the state and across Nigeria.

Dr. Salawudeen said the inspection team was impressed by the facilities, equipment, and personnel available at both institutions, noting that FMC Bida currently has over 60 consultants, attends to between 5,000 and 6,000 patients monthly, and is adequately equipped. He added that FUTMinna boasts a strong academic workforce with several professors and ready-to-occupy hostels for medical students.

He, however, identified some gaps in equipment and manpower at FMC Bida, which is expected to provide clinical training under the proposed arrangement, urging the management to address the shortcomings to meet required standards.

Speaking on behalf of FUTMinna, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Faruk Adamu Kuta, welcomed the partnership, describing it as a long-awaited development that would benefit Nigeria and the global community. He said both institutions are committed to building a world-class medical school capable of addressing the country’s healthcare challenges.

He pledged that the hospital would provide high-quality training for medical students and revealed plans to relocate to its permanent site to improve operations and resolve space limitations.

The inspection team also toured key facilities at FUTMinna, including a 48-bed female medical students’ hostel, a male hostel, a fully equipped human anatomy laboratory, the Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety, and the university’s central store.

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that local government officials under the party diverted about ₦300 billion meant for workers’ salaries.

Adeleke had made the allegation during a stakeholders’ meeting, accusing APC-controlled council officials of hijacking funds and forcing the state government to shoulder salary payments for local government workers, teachers, health staff, and pensioners for over a year.

He insisted he would not abandon workers, blaming the situation for delays in executing some state projects.

But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.

The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.

APC also said pension-related records, leave bonuses, cooperative deductions, and other financial data had not been made available despite repeated appeals, insisting that funds were properly accounted for and available for use if approved.

The party urged pensioners and workers to seek clarification, insisting the situation could be resolved if the governor allowed due process to take place.
