According to Nivo News, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified measures to protect the integrity of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise, declaring that only eligible Nigerian citizens of voting age will be enrolled into the national voters’ register.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Commission disclosed that it has strengthened collaboration with critical institutions, including the Judiciary and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), as part of a comprehensive strategy to eliminate multiple registrations and prevent ineligible individuals from gaining access to the electoral register.

INEC emphasized that these renewed partnerships are central to verifying age, citizenship and identity, stressing that the credibility of the entire electoral process rests on the integrity of the CVR exercise.

Speaking in Sokoto, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Umar Yusuf Garba, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting a transparent and credible registration process across the country.

Garba explained that INEC is working closely with courts to authenticate age declarations and supporting documents, while also collaborating with the Nigeria Immigration Service to ensure that only Nigerian citizens, particularly in border communities, are registered as voters.

He stated that verifiable records such as birth certificates, primary school certificates and court-issued age declarations are being relied upon to confirm that registrants have attained the constitutionally required voting age of 18 years.

The REC noted that cooperation with immigration authorities has become increasingly necessary due to Nigeria’s porous borders, adding that the Commission is determined to prevent non-citizens from infiltrating the voters’ register.

He described the inter-agency collaboration as vital to safeguarding the integrity of elections and sustaining public trust in the democratic process.

Garba further revealed that the first phase of the CVR recorded impressive participation nationwide, with over 162,000 new voters registered in Sokoto State alone.

He added that Sokoto ranked third nationwide in the number of new registrants, coming behind Osun State in first place and Kano State in second.

The REC also disclosed that INEC has intensified voter education and public enlightenment campaigns across the state to boost participation while discouraging electoral malpractice.

According to him, the Commission remains committed to ensuring that eligible Nigerians not only register but also appreciate the importance of lawful and responsible participation in the electoral process.

Looking ahead, Garba renewed calls for the creation of a special electoral offences tribunal, describing it as a crucial reform needed to deter violations, strengthen the electoral system and enhance public confidence.

He assured Nigerians that INEC is continuously learning, improving and correcting past shortcomings, adding that with committed personnel and stronger institutions, the country is steadily advancing towards a more credible electoral system.

Triggered by a motion from Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong concerning a June 30, 2026, ultimatum issued to Nigerians in South Africa, lawmakers expressed urgent concern for the safety and livelihoods of their citizens. While some senators, such as Salihu Mustapha, advocated for severing diplomatic relations immediately, others—including Yahaya Abdullahi—suggested that the attacks might be a coordinated effort to destabilize the South African government.
