Yakubu Rallies Behind Victor Osimhen After AFCON 2025 Goal Drought.
Former Nigeria striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has defended Victor Osimhen following the forward’s failure to score in Nigeria’s opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, emphasizing that the striker’s overall impact on the team should not be underestimated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Although Osimhen did not find the back of the net, the Super Eagles began their Group C campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Fez, courtesy of goals from defender Semi Ajayi and reigning African Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman. The Galatasaray forward had a goal disallowed for offside shortly after the second half began but still ended the match with seven attempts, three of which were on target.
Despite criticism from some Nigerian fans regarding his missed chances, Aiyegbeni praised Osimhen’s effort and determination. “As a striker, you miss chances, and you score some. I think he works so hard for the team; he was just unlucky not to score,” Aiyegbeni said during an appearance on The Boom Show in Morocco.
The former Everton striker also highlighted improved performances in midfield, applauding Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze for their influence in the game. Iwobi notably assisted both Nigerian goals. “I can say today is much better with Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi. They tried to create chances. We still need a creative midfielder, but they did really well this time,” he added.
Nigeria is set to face Tunisia on Saturday before concluding the group stage against Uganda next Tuesday. The Super Eagles are three-time AFCON champions, having won the tournament in 1980, 1994, and 2013, and narrowly missed a fourth title last year after a 2-1 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast in the final.
