According to Nivo News, the House had on September 30, 2025, declined to screen and confirm Okaeben following an alleged petition to the Department of State Services (DSS). At that time, the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, cited the screening committee’s report indicating that Okaeben, a former member of the House, had unresolved issues with the DSS.

However, on December 23, 2025, during a plenary session, the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpehbolo, sent a formal letter requesting the House to complete Okaeben’s screening and confirmation. The letter, dated December 22, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, urged lawmakers to finalize the process and approve Okaeben’s appointment.

Following the Governor’s request, the House proceeded to screen and confirm Chris Okaeben as the 27th Commissioner in the state cabinet, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his appointment.
