Recent online publications had alleged that the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Professor Simon Ortuanya, approved the appointment of Adichie alongside Professor Kevin Urama of the African Development Bank and Professor James Robinson of the University of Chicago as visiting professors. The reports further claimed that the appointments were announced in a statement dated December 18, 2025, and issued by the university’s acting public relations officer, Inya Egwu, as part of efforts to position UNN on the global academic stage.
However, Adichie firmly refuted the claims in an official statement released on Wednesday through her communications team and signed by Omawumi Ogbe. She stated that she has neither received such an appointment nor engaged in any discussion with the university regarding a visiting professorship.
The statement clarified that reports suggesting official appointment letters were issued and signed on December 18, 2025, were inaccurate. While acknowledging her deep personal connection to UNN, where she grew up and where her parents once served as Professor and Registrar, Adichie expressed disappointment that such a significant announcement could be circulated without proper verification.
She urged members of the public and the media to disregard the reports and called on outlets currently publishing the story to remove it to prevent the spread of misinformation.
