According to Nivo News, Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi etched his name into the history books on Tuesday night after equalling a 12-year-old Africa Cup of Nations record previously set by former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel, as Nigeria secured a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their opening match of the 2025 AFCON.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Iwobi, who featured prominently alongside Wilfred Ndidi in midfield, delivered an outstanding performance that proved decisive for the Super Eagles. He provided two crucial assists that ultimately determined the outcome of the encounter. His first contribution came in the opening half when he floated an accurate cross into the box for defender Semi Ajayi, who powered home a header to give Nigeria the lead.

Tanzania responded early in the second half through Charles M’Mombwa, who found the equaliser to briefly restore parity. However, Iwobi once again demonstrated his quality and composure, splitting the Tanzanian defence with a well-weighted pass to Ademola Lookman, who finished calmly to seal the winning goal for Nigeria.

Match data confirmed that Iwobi has become only the second Nigerian player since 2010 to register two assists in a single AFCON game, matching a record set by John Obi Mikel during Nigeria’s clash against Mali in February 2013 — a tournament that ended with the Super Eagles lifting their third continental title.

The victory places Nigeria second in Group C after the opening round of matches, level on points with Tunisia but behind on goal difference. Tunisia currently top the group following their 3-1 win over Uganda on the same night.
