FG Cracks Down On Terrorists: Social Media Accounts To Be Shut Down.
The Federal Government has confirmed that Nigerian security agencies are working closely with major social media platforms to identify and remove accounts used by terrorist and criminal groups to promote their activities and raise funds.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, Director-General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, disclosed this on Tuesday during an end-of-year briefing in Abuja. He noted that platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X have been exploited by terrorist groups to publicize operations, display looted goods, and communicate with supporters.
Laka explained that security agencies have engaged repeatedly with social media companies to address content and accounts deemed threats to national security.
“The scale of social media accounts used by terrorist groups is significant. We have held multiple meetings with platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and X. While these companies are focused on growing their user base, we work with them to explain the national security implications of certain posts, and we ensure these accounts are taken down,” he said.
He recalled that at one point, bandits openly showcased their loot on TikTok and even conducted live streams to interact with followers. “Those accounts have been removed, and such activities have been curtailed,” Laka added.
The counter-terrorism chief highlighted that terrorist groups continually adapt their methods, often operating under aliases and unverified accounts, and security agencies are constantly evolving their strategies to counter these shifts.
Laka also identified ransom payments as a major source of terror financing, noting the increasing use of point-of-sale (POS) operators to move funds. Payments are often transferred into accounts belonging to POS operators, who then release the cash to kidnappers, complicating financial tracking.
“You may see a transfer by terrorists, but the account belongs to a POS operator. The kidnappers provide the POS operator’s number, the money is transferred, and they collect it,” he explained.
He stated that security agencies have intensified efforts to trace ransom payments, arrest those involved, and dismantle terror financing networks, although operational specifics cannot be disclosed for security reasons. Several arrests, prosecutions, and asset recoveries have already been carried out, contributing to Nigeria’s compliance with international anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards.
Laka further highlighted that Nigeria’s recent progress in meeting Financial Action Task Force requirements was partly due to coordinated investigations by a joint committee of security agencies, financial intelligence units, and the judiciary.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by evolving terrorist tactics and porous borders in the Sahel region, Laka assured Nigerians that security agencies are strengthening both physical and digital counter-terrorism measures.
“By the end of 2023, the security situation in Nigeria was improving. However, following coups in some Sahel countries, the situation worsened because terrorist networks span the region. Nigeria must play a leadership role in West Africa and the Sahel to address these threats. We are committed and will not relent. In 2026, we will further intensify our efforts,” he said.
