The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) operative following a fatal road accident on Meran Road, along the Iyana Ekoro corridor in Lagos.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Saturday via its official X handle, LASTMA, through its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, stated that the female LAWMA staff member was performing routine environmental sanitation duties when the tragic incident occurred.

According to the agency, the victim was struck by a blue Ford commercial bus, registration number BDG 495 YH, which was allegedly reversing dangerously and illegally on the expressway.

“The vehicle suddenly rammed into the unsuspecting LAWMA sweeper who was engaged in roadside cleaning. The impact, particularly to her head, was severe and resulted in her immediate death,” the statement read.

LASTMA disclosed that its operatives, who were on active traffic monitoring duty, responded promptly after receiving an alert about the crash.

“The driver fled the scene in an apparent attempt to evade responsibility. However, LASTMA officers pursued and apprehended him, returning both the suspect and the vehicle to the scene,” the agency added.

The arrested driver and the bus were subsequently handed over to the Meiran Police Division for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.

LASTMA noted that the quick intervention of its personnel also prevented a potential breakdown of law and order, as the suspect narrowly avoided being attacked by an angry crowd.

The body of the deceased was later evacuated from the scene by LAWMA officials using an official vehicle to allow for necessary procedures.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the death as tragic and avoidable. He extended his condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased, praying for strength and comfort in their time of loss.

Bakare-Oki strongly condemned the act of reversing on an expressway, calling it a serious traffic violation and a clear breach of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. He urged motorists to avoid reckless and unlawful driving, warning that such behavior continues to cause unnecessary loss of life.

He also commended the professionalism and prompt response of LASTMA officers involved, particularly for ensuring the arrest of the suspect and preventing his escape from justice.

Chidi Odinkalu, the former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, recently commented on the political challenges facing former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a post on this past Sunday, Odinkalu suggested that Omo-Agege likely did not anticipate his current situation during the 2018 controversy involving the Senate mace. Odinkalu highlighted that Omo-Agege has experienced a series of political setbacks over the last week, which include his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and losses in two separate senatorial primaries—one to a male opponent and one to a female opponent.

Reflecting on these events, Odinkalu offered the following observations:

  • While noting that leadership is voluntary, he remarked that it is unfortunate when individuals seeking it for the “right reasons” face repeated denial.

  • He claimed that when Omo-Agege was involved in the 2018 mace incident to demonstrate his dedication to the APC, he likely did not foresee the difficulties he is currently experiencing.

  • Odinkalu acknowledged that Omo-Agege was arguably responsible for building the APC into a credible force within Delta State.

  • He concluded by noting that these events serve as a sharp reminder that political power is temporary, particularly as he commented on how the current administration distributes rewards.

Intelligence sources indicate the photo was captured following an intelligence-led strike against high-ranking ISWAP leaders near Metele in Borno State. Security officials informed Zagazola Makama that this is considered the first verified image of al-Minuki since his involvement in the Boko Haram insurgency and his subsequent ascent within ISWAP. Despite his high profile, the commander had previously managed to remain largely elusive to both the public and security services.

The photograph was reportedly taken by fellow fighters who recovered and interred the body two days after the operation. This image is expected to confirm the identity of the fallen commander and provide rare visibility into one of the group’s most guarded figures.
